Welcome to the RPI Student Development Wiki,
a web development resource created by students for students. |
| Rensselaer · RPI Union · RPI Student Senate · myRPI-Space Hosting |
Finally, web development being taken seriously at RPI.
We set up this wiki as a space for students to learn and share what they know about web development. We hope that it will be a valuable resource both when you're working with our server in particular, and throughout your web development adventures, wherever they may lead.
About myRPI Space
myRPI Space, also known as the Student Development service, is a free web hosting service maintained by the Student Senate's Web Technologies Group. It provides access to cutting-edge web technologies not offered by RPI itself or by the RPI Union. With myRPI-space, we want to encourage tech-savvy students to explore, experiment, and work with an advanced web platform without having to run their own individual servers. myRPI Space is run by students, for students.
To learn more about the service and why we're hosting it, and to get started with your own .myrpi.org website, visit the myRPI Space info page.
my-RPI Space Technologies
All of the following are available on the student development server, and we'll try to provide as much information on each feature as we can. We strongly recommend visiting the page associated with each technology before attempting to use it, and certainly before asking for help with it. After that, if you're still stumped, we'll be glad to help (see below).
- cPanel
- PHP
- Ruby on Rails (be sure to visit this page before you begin working with Rails!)
- Perl/CGI
- MySQL and postgreSQL Databases
- Shell Access
- FTP Access
- Domain Name Hosting
- Subversion currently in beta
Help and Support
We may have mentioned at some point that this service is run by students. The implications are twofold:
- We're students - we don't get paid for this and don't have all the time in the world, so please try to be understanding with the amount of time it takes to get back to you
- We're human beings, which means we are capable of a little empathy (on occasion). Your feedback and questions are always welcome and we'll do our best to be responsive. This service is here for you, the student web developer, and we want you to get the most out of it.
How to reach us:
- The most effective way to report a problem is through the ticketing system: http://admin.myrpi.org/support/
- You can always email us with problems, questions, and feedback: senate-webmaster@union.rpi.edu
